Users of Instagram are no longer restricted to sharing photographs in a square format. The maximum size of photos uploaded to the widely used social networking app has expanded in tandem with the app’s popularity. You are not limited to only posting in the standard square format; you may also publish in virtually full-length vertical and horizontal orientations.
While Instagram has expanded its features and capabilities, there are still size limits on uploaded photos. You should not worry about Instagram publishing low-quality photographs since you do not know the crop ratio or how to prevent it. You can count on us to take care of you.

The dimensions and aspect ratio of an Instagram story
Unless you’re using the Instagram app’s built-in camera to take and share photos, it’s important to be aware of the various file sizes accepted by the service. To your benefit, they are not uniform; different publishing formats have varied criteria, and we’ll start with Stories.
It’s recommended that you choose a resolution of 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels or higher when uploading a photo from your Camera Roll. In case you’re not familiar with the phrase “aspect ratio,” this simply means that the ratio of the width to the height of your image should be 9:16 (1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels high). Thus, the maximum allowable size in terms of MB is 30MB due to these constraints.
If you post a photo that isn’t exactly these proportions, Instagram will automatically adjust it to fit, as seen in the illustration below.

There is some leeway in terms of photo proportions when it comes to your Instagram feed. Yet, not every size is the same. The best quality post is possible, but there are some limitations and ideal sizes for each photo format.
Dimensions and aspect ratio for Instagram portraits
Instagram suggests a size of 1080 pixels by 1350 pixels for vertical (or portrait) photographs. When compressed, the resulting resolution will be 480 by 600 pixels. There is a 4:5 aspect ratio for that size.
If you try to submit a photo taken with your iPhone that is larger than 4:5, Instagram will automatically reduce the image to 4:5.
Size for Instagram square photos
You just want to stick with the standards sometimes. And in that situation, I’d recommend going with a square photo.
It is suggested that images be no less than 1080 pixels by 1080 pixels, with a 1:1 aspect ratio, for use in this format. With Instagram’s compression, the final image size will be closer to 600 by 600 pixels.

Instagram still automatically adjusts your photos to a square shape. If you want to restore the original length of your shot, however, it only takes one more click in the uploading procedure. Here’s how to upload a landscape or portrait photo in its full glory:
- Launch the Instagram app.
- To add something, tap the plus sign in the screen’s bottom-right corner.
- To upload an image, just find it and pick it.
- To see more, use the enlargement toggle in the photo’s lower left corner.
- To proceed, please click Next.
- You can opt to include a filter if you desire.
- Keep on by clicking the next button.
- Provide a caption and any other relevant information.
- Just hit the Share button.
Keep in mind that Instagram will force your photo into a square shape if you don’t use the aforementioned settings. If you don’t want your photo cropped when it’s published, follow the instructions above to enlarge it to the maximum allowable dimensions.
Changing a photo’s dimensions for use on Instagram
If you need to adjust the dimensions of an image before uploading it to Instagram, you may do it in the exact same way as you would for an Instagram Story.
To get the perfect Instagram-friendly size, follow these steps in the iPhone’s Pictures app:
- Launch the photo viewer.
- Find the image you wish to modify.
- To edit, use the pencil icon in the upper right corner.
- Choose the crop function by clicking the button in the lower right corner.
- To adjust the size, click the corresponding button in the upper right corner.
- To upload a photo to Instagram in the correct aspect ratio, go through the available options (Square or 8:10).
- Size is an option.
You’re free to experiment with resizing the image to make it fit the allotted space.

Does uploading photos to Instagram cause a decline in quality?
Several Instagram users feel the service is to blame for poor photo quality. It’s true that the social networking app reduces image quality while posting, however images are still uploaded at the maximum allowable width of 1080 pixels.
If you try to submit an image with an unsupported aspect ratio, Instagram will automatically crop it to a ratio that is. Uploading a high-resolution photo to Instagram will cause it to be shrunk to a width of 1080 pixels, while submitting a low-resolution photo would cause it to be enlarged to a width of 320 pixels.
Your photographs will not be of poor quality so long as you adhere to Instagram’s upload guidelines.
Photographic dimensions for Instagram profiles
Lastly, profile pictures fall under the last area of image restrictions you should be aware of. Your Instagram profile photo has to be at least 110 pixels wide and tall so that it may be displayed on your profile page, in your Story, and next to your posts. It’s limited to a maximum of 180px by 180px in resolution.
While it takes just a few clicks to get your photographs up on Instagram, you want to make sure they’re the right size for the service to ensure your followers see the most of what you have to offer.
